Osteoarthritis Education for Health Professionals: An Online Trial

Are you a health professional who is interested in enhancing your knowledge and skills to deliver the best evidence-based osteoarthritis care?

We invite you to participate in our study investigating health professionals' knowledge and skills in delivering osteoarthritis treatment according to clinical guidelines. We are investigating if online educational resources influence the clinical behaviours of health professionals in their delivery of osteoarthritis care.

What does the study aim to acheive?

Aim 1

To evaluate the effectiveness of an online osteoarthritis resource for health professions to understand if it improves confidence in knowledge and confidence in skills to align with recommended evidence-based practice for osteoarthritis.

Aim 2

To understand if the online educational resources influence the clinical behaviours of health professionals in their delivery of osteoarthritis care.

Who can take part?

The study is suitable for people who are:

  • Health professionals who can read and understand English.

  • Health professionals will be considered eligible if they regularly treat people with osteoarthritis within their scope of practice.

  • As the education will be provided online, health professionals will be required to have access to or ownership of a smart device and have access to the internet.

Osteoarthritis Education for Health Professionals: An Online Trial FAQs

  • If you are interested in joining the study, you will need to complete the online screening survey here. If you meet the eligibility criteria, the study team will be in contact via email or phone.

  • If you decide to take part in this study, you will be randomised by computer to one of two groups. The two groups will be provided with different educational materials. You will be asked to complete a survey before and after the online education task.

    Specifically, your participation will involve;

    • Initial survey (15 minutes)

    • Completion of education task (over 10 weeks)

    • Follow up survey at 10 weeks (15 minutes)

    • Follow up survey at 6 months

    • Optional participation in focus groups at 6 months (60-minutes). Focus group sessions will be recorded. 

     The survey questions will ask questions about:

    1. Your confidence in your knowledge and skills regarding the best-evidence management of people with osteoarthritis.

    2. Your clinical behaviour pertaining to best-evidence osteoarthritis management.

    The focus group meetings will focus on the facilitators and/or barriers to implementing evidence-based care for osteoarthritis after completing the health professional education tasks.

    The study can be completed online at a location and time of your choice.

  • Being in this study is completely voluntary and you do not have to take part.

    Your decision will not affect your current or future relationship with the researchers or anyone else at The University of Sydney.  We do not anticipate your decision to participate will affect your relationship with any other individuals or organisations in your networks or workplace.

    If you decide to take part in the study and then change your mind you can withdraw by notifying the researcher responsible for the study.

    By submitting your initial survey, you consent to take part in the study. You can withdraw any time before you submit however once your responses are submitted, they cannot be withdrawn.  Any information that we have already collected will be kept in our study records and may be included in the study results. If your data are included in the study results it will not be possible to identify you as the results will be presented in an aggregated summarised format. If you decide to withdraw, we will not collect any more information from you.

    If you take part in a focus group, you are free to stop at any stage or to refuse to answer any of the questions. However, since it is a group discussion, it may not be possible to withdraw your individual comments from our records once the group has started, however, if you have a specific statement, you wish the investigators omit from the study results, this can be requested by contacting the study investigators. It will not be possible to identify your response to the focus group questions because the results will be anonymised.

  • Possible risks may include minor psychological discomfort. We encourage you to contact your employee assistance program or primary health care professional if discomfort persists.  We do not expect that there will be any other risks or costs associated with taking part in this study.

  • You will receive direct benefit by participating in this study by receiving Continued Professional Education (CPE) points. You are also eligible to claim a VISA gift card to the value of $50 at completion of the study (when you have submitted your survey at 6 months).

  • You have a right to receive feedback about the overall results of this study. If you are interested in receiving feedback, please answer the relevant question in the online questionnaire. This feedback will be in the form of a brief lay summary.
