Hip and knee osteoarthritis clinical trial in Australia

The University of Sydney’s CASCADE-OA study is researching an intervention for hip or knee osteoarthritis.

CASCADE-OA is a study looking at whether a self-guided physical activity program, designed for people with hip or knee osteoarthritis can improve physical activity levels. Those who are eligible will have a 50/50 chance of being randomly assigned to one of two groups: Group A - participants will be provided with a self-guided 12 week physical activity program and a Fitbit to wear daily; or Group B - participants will continue with daily activities while wearing the Fitbit as provided.

What does the study aim to acheive?

Aim 1

To test the effectiveness of the self-guided 12 week program on physical activity levels.

Aim 2

To determine if the new program can be successfully implemented in Australia and help with reducing OA symptoms and improving quality of life for those living with OA.

Who can take part?

The study is suitable for people who:

  • Are aged 45 years or older

  • Have activity-related hip or knee pain

  • Are willing to participate in a self-guided activity program
