Knee Osteoarthritis Clinical Trial in NSW

The COASTAL study is a clinical research trial testing three different ways to deliver care for people with knee osteoarthritis.

The goal is to find out which model of care works best to improve knee pain and function and support long-term management.

The COASTAL study is run by researchers from the University of Sydney and includes public hospital and community health services across New South Wales. This is a not-for-profit research study.

The survey will take approximately 10 minutes to complete. You can save your progress and return at any time.

What does this study aim to achieve?

Osteoarthritis affects over 3 million Australians and is a leading cause of disability. Although evidence-based treatments are available, many people do not receive appropriate or accessible care.

This study compares three ways of delivering osteoarthritis care:

  • Face-to-Face Program (Osteoarthritis Chronic Care Program – OACCP) delivered in a hospital setting

  • Telehealth Program delivered via phone or video by a trained Care Support Team

  • Mobile App Program (OA Coach app) delivered via smart device with personalised education and support

All programs aim to support lifestyle changes such as exercise, physical activity, weight management, and self-management of osteoarthritis.

Aim 1

This study will compare the effectiveness of the three programs.

Aim 2

This study will determine the cost-effectiveness of the three programs.
